Exotic Ways of Lamu

Widely considered to be the highpoint of the island’s festivals, Lamu Cultural Festival is a week long extol of the rich Swahili culture through music, poetry, bao events, arts, dhow sailing, donkey racing, and much more. At most times of year just a quiet town, Lamu comes to life during this annual festival. Several competitions and races are staged during this week long fair. Started in 2001, the cultural festival has grown exponentially and has become a key culture event in Kenya, drawing in local and global crowds, to appreciate and participate in Lamu’s unique cultures.

Nowhere perhaps are the exotic ways of Lamu better offered that on its 10 annual festivals that never fail to interest the traveller, all held in the beautiful outdoors. The festivals of Lamu are: Lamu Painters Festival (February), the Shela Hat Festival (February), Lamu Yoga Festival (March), Lamu Food Festival (April), Eid-Ur-Fitr (June), Lamu Cultural Festival (November), Lamu Fishing Festival, Lamu Triathlon, El-Maulidi Festival (December) and New’s Years Dhow Race (January).
